This isn't the first major change in production for The Blacklist in recent years, with season 7's finale being reworked into a hybrid of live-action and animated footage. When the show returns, it will instead air on Friday nights, as the revival of Law & Order takes up The Blacklist's Thursday time slot. The show will then once more go off the air for the duration of the Winter Olympics from the 4th to the 20th.

It has now been revealed that the show will receive some scheduling changes when it returns in 2022. Season 9 of The Blacklist began with a 2-year time skip after the shocking events of "Konets," airing on Thursday nights from October 21 to December 9, leaving audiences with a cliffhanger as the show went on break for the holidays. As well as Bokenkamp leaving the show after eight seasons, Megan Boone, who plays the main character, Elizabeth 'Liz' Keen, also departed, with season 8, episode 22 "Konets" seeing Liz die in Red's arms after being shot in the back by a henchman of crime lord Neville Townsend (Reg Rogers). Navy Officer-turned-criminal-turned FBI aid, Raymond 'Red' Redington, season 9 has seen many major changes from prior seasons to the status quo of the series.
Season 9 premiered in October 2021 with "The Skinner" on NBC. It is also the first season with new showrunner John Eisendrath, taking over the position following the departure of series creator, Jon Bokenkamp. The Blacklist will air on a new night when season 9 of the crime thriller starring James Spader returns in 2022, switching to Friday nights.
